The Setting

"She had never thought of herself as a sensual human being, but something in India had woken her up. Perhaps it was the overwhelming beauty of the place with its abundant growth and riotous colours. Perhaps it was the smells, a mixture of heady natural perfume from the tuberose, lilies and marigolds that filled the markets, and the smell of rotting matter that is pungent and somehow sweet. Perhaps it was the heat, impossible to feel frigid in a country such as this. Or perhaps it was simply her age, just turned eighteen and ripe for plucking."

In the excerpt above, India is portrayed as a place that awakens Bella’s senses and sensuality. How important is India to the story? How does the physical environment influence Bella’s transformation from a schoolgirl into a young woman? How are Rami and India connected in Bella’s mind?

Sex and Love

“How do you describe a physical love that is so intense it seems to transcend time and place and belong to another realm?”

Intense physical attraction defines Bella and Rami’s early relationship. What factors contribute to this intensity, is it simply youth or are other factors at play? How does time and distance change their feelings for each other, if at all?
